SUMMARY OF THE BOOK "WRITING AT UNIVERSITY" PAGES 76-80

Structures Used in University Writing

The most important details in university writing are the ways of organizing material into different kinds of structures, such as structures, and how they are used to structure and understand the relationships between different ideas. Examples of these structures are provided, along with an illustration of how they might be used for one assignment.

1. Chronology

Most of us already know about this 'chronology' which is related to time in a text. These structures often exist in historical texts which always mention the time of the event. We might find this structure at the beginning of the assignment so that we can give the background to the rest of the text.

2. Description

This structure doesn't mean only found in the description text. It could be also found in the analytic text which attaches an analysis graph about a thing. It is named as 'description' as long as it adds supporting detail or linking information. So, graphics, diagrams, or charts are also part of this structure.

3. Cause-Effect

When we start to write something, especially when we try to recount, we must then put the cause-effect in. Let's take an example that is different from the book that I summarizing. A student comes late - The teacher is angry. By this sentence, we know the teacher is angry because the student come late. Those sentences bring cause-effect which is related to each other. However, we need to analyze many different factors so we can find the related cause-effect.

4. Compare / Contrast

According to its name, this structure shows the similarities and also the differences between two things mentioned in the text. By comparing/contrasting, we can get more info about each thing. When we start comparing two things, there are two ways we can use them. First, is to mention each of the categories of the thing we want to tell. The second is to mention one thing until finished and after that go to the second thing.

5. Summary

Regarding this subject, I am very familiar with the word, summary. When we were asked to take the point of what the author says in the book, but in our understanding way. After that, we put it in a blog so that people can also read what we already summarize. In summarizing, there are some ways to think to make us easier to make a summary such as what is important about what the author says or how the ideas fit in with what I want to write.

6. Analysis

        The analysis becomes the most difficult kind of writing to explain because this is explained in a different way by university tutors. In analysis, it requires us to have a detailed question. Not only the one whole point but really the detail question like;

- What does this mean?

- Why is this important?

- How does this work?

- How is this put together?

 -Can you explain this?

7. Evaluating

Evaluating is our time to score or make some judgment. But it is not scoring like we used to do in our daily life like, This is good stuff. In writing, when we give an evaluation, we have to put the reason why we say so, for example, The author might add another supporting detail because it is not strong enough to-bla bla bla. Even in some cases, the person who gives the evaluation should give the analysis evaluation so that the scoring will improve the author's writing.
